Always knit and measure a gauge swatch before starting a project where size matters, and adjust needle size or stitch count based on your own swatch rather than the calculator alone.

Results Are Estimates

The tools apply standard knitting-craft formulas and conventions (such as typical stitches-per-yard rates and standard sock negative ease) and round their output for readability. Yardage estimates in particular are approximate: fiber content, tension, cables, colorwork, and ribbing all change how much yarn a project actually uses. Always buy a little extra yarn from the same dye lot when possible.

Why a Result May Look Off

A calculator can return a surprising or blank answer when:

• Units are mismatched: entering centimetres where inches are expected (or the reverse) changes every downstream number.
• The swatch measurement is off:a swatch measured unblocked, unrelaxed, or over too small an area rarely matches the gauge you’ll actually knit at.
• Inputs describe an impossible figure: for example, a zero or negative circumference, length, or gauge.
• The ease assumption doesn’t match your project:the default ease percentages are conventional starting points, not universal rules — a snugger or looser fit changes the right cast-on count.
