How Much Yarn Do You Need for a Pair of Socks?
Sock yarn most often comes in roughly 50g/100g skeins holding somewhere around 200–460 yards, depending on the brand and weight, and the standard knitting-world shorthand is that a single 100g skein of fingering-weight sock yarn is “usually enough for one adult pair.” That's a fine rule of thumb until your feet, your gauge, or your sock's leg length depart from whatever “standard” the shorthand assumes — which, for a lot of knitters, is most of the time.
Why generic yardage advice falls apart
Yardage depends on four things multiplying together: how big around the sock is (foot circumference), how long it is (foot plus leg length), how dense the fabric is (your gauge), and how much yarn your particular stitch pattern eats per stitch (plain stockinette is frugal; cables and heavy texture are not). Change any one of those and the “one skein per pair” guideline can quietly stop being true — a knee-high sock in a size 12 foot at a looser gauge can use noticeably more than double what a snug ankle sock in a size 6 foot needs.
The estimate, built from your own numbers
A sock, for yardage purposes, behaves like a simple tube. Two measurements set its size: the cast-on stitch count (your foot circumference times your stitch gauge) and the total rounds worked (your combined leg-plus-foot length times your row gauge). Multiply cast-on stitches by rounds and you have the total stitch count for the whole sock.
From there, yardage is a conversion: a finer yarn packs more stitches into a yard than a bulkier one. A tightly-spun fingering-weight sock yarn worked at a typical 8 stitches per inch might yield somewhere in the neighborhood of 40–50 stitches per yard, while a worsted-weight yarn at a much looser gauge yields a fraction of that. The sock yarn yardage estimator runs exactly this chain — circumference and length through gauge to a stitch count, then stitch count through an approximate stitches-per-yard rate for your yarn weight — and adds a waste buffer on top.
Worked example
Say you measure an 8-inch foot circumference, a 9-inch foot length, and a 7-inch leg length, and your swatch gives you 8 stitches and 8 rows per inch in fingering weight.
- Cast-on stitches: 8in × 8 sts/in = 64 stitches.
- Total rounds: (9in + 7in) × 8 rows/in = 128 rounds.
- Total stitches: 64 × 128 = 8,192 stitches.
- At roughly 45 stitches per yard for fingering weight, that's about 182 yards before any buffer.
- With a 10% buffer for the swatch, cast-on tail, and cast-off: roughly 200 yards for one sock, or about 400 yards for the pair.
That's comfortably inside a single 100g/400-ish-yard skein for this particular foot size and gauge — but change the foot circumference to 10 inches and the leg to 10 inches, and the total climbs well past what one skein holds. The only way to know for certain is to run your own numbers, not someone else's foot.
Why the buffer matters
The tube model above only accounts for the stitches in the finished fabric — it doesn't account for the yarn used swatching, the cast-on tail, weaving in ends, or the yarn consumed by grafting the toe closed with Kitchener stitch. None of these are huge on their own, but they add up, and running out one round before the toe is a genuinely bad afternoon. A 10% buffer is a reasonable default; if you're new to a particular yarn or pattern, a bit more insurance costs little relative to the frustration of a mismatched second skein.
What changes the estimate the most
Stitch pattern is the biggest wildcard the tube model doesn't capture directly. Plain stockinette is the most yarn-efficient stitch there is. Ribbing uses slightly more per stitch because the fabric pulls in and needs more length to cover the same area. Cables use noticeably more, since the crossed stitches travel further than a straight column. Colorwork carried yarn (stranded knitting) effectively knits two yarns at once across part of the fabric. If your pattern leans heavily on any of these, treat the estimator's output as a floor, not a ceiling, and buy a bit extra.
Buy in one go, from one dye lot
Hand-dyed and even some machine-dyed sock yarns can vary subtly between dye lots or even between skeins from the same lot. If your estimate is close to exactly one skein, it's worth buying a second from the same batch before you start, rather than hoping a reorder weeks later matches. A slightly-off second skein is far more noticeable on a small project like a sock than it would be on a sweater.
