How the estimate is built
A sock, worked in the round, is close enough to a simple tube for estimating purposes: a cast-on stitch count (your foot circumference times your stitch gauge) worked for a number of rounds (your combined leg and foot length times your row gauge). Multiply those together and you have a total stitch count for one sock.
That stitch count is then converted to yardage using an approximate stitches-per-yard rate for your yarn weight, and a waste buffer is added on top to cover the swatch, cast-on tail, and cast-off — the yarn a project uses beyond the tube itself.

How accurate is a yardage estimate like this?
It's a planning estimate, not a guarantee. The tool models a sock as a simple tube — cast-on stitches times total rounds — and converts that stitch count to yardage using an approximate stitches-per-yard rate for your yarn weight. Cables, colorwork, and heavily textured stitch patterns use noticeably more yarn than plain stockinette, so treat the result as a starting point and buy a little extra where possible.
Why does yarn weight change the yardage so much?
A finer yarn packs far more stitches into a yard than a bulkier one. Fingering-weight sock yarn, knit at a tight sock gauge, might yield roughly 40-50 stitches per yard, while a worsted-weight yarn at a looser gauge yields a fraction of that — so the same stitch count needs very different amounts of yarn depending on weight.
Should I buy exactly the estimated amount?
No — buy a bit more if you can, ideally from the same dye lot. This estimator already includes a waste buffer (10% by default) for the swatch, cast-on tail, and cast-off, but real projects vary, and running out one round before the toe is worse than having a partial skein left over.
